Berkshire War Memorials
To commemorate the losses suffered by the 66th an appeal was launched which resulted in the construction of the Maiwand Lion in Forbury Gardens and a window in the south wall of St Mary's Minster.
The Maiwand Window (WM5463)
This memorial is located beneath the window and commemorates Captain William Augustus Mackinnon. Although with the 66th in Afghanistan he was not present at the battle of Maiwand and died 22nd January 1923

READING - St Mary's Minster - Maiwand
The 2nd Afghan War was fought in 1879-1880 and involved the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment (later to be come the 2nd Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment)To commemorate the losses suffered by the 66th an appeal was launched which resulted in the construction of the Maiwand Lion in Forbury Gardens and a window in the south wall of St Mary's Minster.
